The bark of Mudjala (Barringtonia acutangula) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of pain by Aboriginal Australians in the Kimberley for countless generations. The Traditional Knowledge Holders of this medicine are now seeking to commercialize this product and make it available to consumers suffering from chronic or acute pain conditions. In accordance with current regulations directed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, a method for authentication of the herbal material and quantification of major bioactive compounds has been developed. This method has been applied for analysis of Mudjala samples collected from different plant organs and at different times of year, as well as comparison of plants grown on Country versus those purchased commercially. The results indicate a substantially different chemical profile in these different samples. The effect of the traditional preparation and administration route has also been examined to ensure the commercial preparation mimics the traditional preparation as closely as possible.
