Kamila Kochan

Dr Kamila Kochan is a Lecturer and Group Leader in the School of Chemistry and the Centre to Impact AMR at Monash University, where she also serves as Theme Lead for the AI Solutions for Diagnostics Theme. She leads a distinctive multidisciplinary research program at the interface of analytical chemistry, vibrational spectroscopy, microbiology, and chemometrics, with a particular focus on antimicrobial resistance. As a physical and analytical chemist, Dr Kochan has spent the past decade advancing vibrational spectroscopy for biological systems, helping transform the field from a materials-characterisation tool into a life-science measurement platform capable of revealing molecular-level insights in living systems. Her research spans both fundamental discovery and translation, from single-cell and nanoscale chemical imaging of bacteria to clinically oriented diagnostic platforms for infection medicine. Beyond AMR, where her work includes both translational diagnostics and mechanistic studies, her broader research interests extend across biospectroscopy applications in women’s health and the impact of environmental pollutants, including microplastics, on human cells. Dr Kochan has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers, cited more than 4,500 times, is co-inventor on two international patents, and has secured competitive and industry funding, including support from the European Union and the NHMRC. Her contributions have been recognised through national and international awards, including the 2022 Australian Leader in Molecular Spectroscopy Award and the 2025 ICAVS International Award.
