Paolo Gagliardi

Paolo Gagliardi is a PhD candidate in the School of Chemistry and the Bio21 Institute at The University of Melbourne, under the supervision of Dr Ludovica Monti. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Perugia (Italy) before completing an MSc at The University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor Spencer Williams. His master's research focused on natural product total synthesis and the marine bacterial degradation of small sulfur-containing molecules. His PhD research lies at the interface of medicinal chemistry and chemical biology, focusing on the development of small molecules that target non-canonical nucleic acid secondary structures as potential therapeutic agents for neglected tropical diseases, including leishmaniasis and African sleeping sickness. His work combines synthetic chemistry with biophysical characterisation to investigate and optimise ligand–nucleic acid interactions.
