George Vamvounis

George is the Head of Physical Sciences (Bioinformatics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Maths, Data Science and Physics) and focuses on sustainability in terms of energy generation, usage, and pollution control. To that end, his research relates to (1) polymer semiconductors and (2) understanding and solving plastic pollution. Polymer semiconductors are revolutionary materials that provide flexible alternatives for generating and using energy (e.g., polymer solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and transistors) and sensory devices. His research in polymer semiconductors focuses on the preparation of new light-gated materials for these applications. Plastic pollution, particularly in the form of microplastics, is growing rapidly, and its ecological effects need to be understood to propose viable solutions. George’s research in this area focuses on additive leaching processes and the development of sustainable alternatives.
