I am a UWA PhD student, born and raised right here in Perth. Out of high school, I came to UWA to study chemistry and biochemistry, and have remained on that track ever since. I am interested in the crossroads of these two fields—where they merge to beautiful effect. In my third year of undergraduate studies, I signed up to do a project under Swaminatha Iyer. This project centred around the synthesis of ‘dendrimers’; promising polymers which could potentially serve as gene delivery reagents. The Iyer lab frequently blurs the boundary between chemistry and biochemistry, and as such I found our work incredibly interesting. For my Honours, I remained in the Iyer lab and explored a customised library of dendronised polymers for gene delivery to the skin. Now, for my PhD, I'm going a step beneath and am hoping to develop a world-first organoid model of the peripheral nervous system for the purposes of drug discovery.
